What is an Electronic Gold Receipt (EGR)?

An Electronic Gold Receipt (EGR) is a digital instrument representing ownership of physical gold stored in SEBI-approved vaults.

EGRs are traded through recognised stock exchanges such as NSE and BSE.

Important: EGRs are regulated by SEBI and provide a transparent, secure and exchange-based gold investment mechanism.

Taxation of EGR under Income Tax Act, 2025

1. Short-Term Capital Gain (STCG)

If an EGR is sold within 24 months from the date of acquisition:

  • Profit is treated as Short-Term Capital Gain
  • Taxable at normal slab rates applicable to the taxpayer
Example:
Purchase Price = ₹5,00,000
Sale Price = ₹5,80,000
STCG = ₹80,000

2. Long-Term Capital Gain (LTCG)

If EGR is sold after 24 months:

  • Gain becomes Long-Term Capital Gain
  • Tax Rate = 12.5%
  • Indexation benefit generally not available
Example:
Purchase Price = ₹5,00,000
Sale Price after 30 months = ₹7,00,000
LTCG = ₹2,00,000

Tax = ₹25,000 plus applicable cess and surcharge

3. Conversion of Physical Gold into EGR

Conversion of physical gold into EGR through approved vault managers is generally treated as a non-taxable conversion mechanism.

Capital gains generally arise only upon actual sale or transfer of EGR.

4. Redemption of EGR into Physical Gold

Redemption of EGR into physical gold is generally considered a conversion process and may not itself trigger taxation.

However, subsequent sale of redeemed gold may attract capital gains tax.

5. GST Implications

Trading of EGR on recognised stock exchanges may not attract GST in the same manner as physical gold supply.

GST implications may arise upon physical delivery or redemption of gold depending upon transaction structure.

6. Securities Transaction Tax (STT)

EGRs do not currently enjoy the concessional capital gains tax treatment available to listed equity shares.

Electronic Gold Receipt (EGR)

1. Short-Term Capital Gain (STCG)

STCG = ₹80,000

2. Long-Term Capital Gain (LTCG)

  • LTCG Tax Rate = 12.5%
  • Indexation Benefit

LTCG = ₹2,00,000

5. GST Implications

6. Securities Transaction Tax (STT)
